Overview

Aurangabad, which was declared by the Government as the Tourism Capital of Maharashtra back in 2010, is a famous tourist hub that greets its visitors with a richly woven tapestry of sights and sounds. The city got its name for being the erstwhile capital of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century AD. The town is used as the base to explore the extremely famous caves of Ajanta and Ellora, Daulatabad Fort which is renowned for its strong defence systems, Mausoleums of Aurangzeb and Bibi-Ka-Maqbara famous for its architecture.

Daulatabad Fort

Located atop a hill, Daulatabad was built in the 14th century. Its first owner was Muhammad Bin Tughluq. The ruler forced people in Delhi to shift here, and so they did. But the people, after two years, abandoned it due to lack of water. The fort is 200 metres high and stands on a conical hill. The only entranceway for this fort is a narrow bridge that can be used only by two people at a time. Chand Minar, Chini Mahal, and Baradari are some most loved structures inside the fort. Chand Minar was erected by Alauddin Brahman Shah in 1435 AD.

En route to the famed Ellora Caves, one passes through the fortified town of Khuldabad. The area has come to be known as the Valley of the Saints because of the many tomb shrines of the Chishti Sufi masters and saints that adorn the valley’s landscape. The shrine of Moinuddin Chishti of Khuldabad and the shrine of the Sufi saint Muntajib al-Din are located here. Apart from the tomb of the Sufi saints, the valley also hosts the tomb of Aurangzeb, the last great Mughal emperor, the Tomb of Asif Jah, the first Nizam of Hyderabad and the tomb of Tana Shan, the last king of Golconda.
