Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scotland

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the largest arts festival in the world, featuring over 250 venues and thousands of shows from August 5th til 29th August. Concerts, comedy, theatre, musicals, operas, and children’s shows are just some of your options. With thousands of shows you can be sure to find something that everyone will enjoy. Edinburgh is accessible by air, road and train, though you should consider travelling by bus or rail in order to take in the gorgeous landscape.

Feria de Malaga, Spain

This festival dates back to the 1400’s and celebrates the re-conquest of Spain, running during the third week of August. It starts with an official announcement, the ‘Pregón de la Feria’, made by a celebrity at town hall. Following that is a massive display of fireworks and ten days of wild partying. Open air bars are packed and there is dancing in the streets and people everywhere enjoying sherry. The annual bullfighting festival is held at the Plaza de Toros. Food and tapas are available at casetas or restaurants throughout town.

Leipzig Water Festival, Germany

Looking for a type of race that doesn’t happen elsewhere? The Leipzig Water Festival runs from the 26th to the 28th August and offers different types of races along the 11 km of waterways. These races range from boats and homemade rafts to a comical rubber duck race. Come and cheer them on! It’s not only water races though. The festival offers other types of entertainment for all ages. A range of concerts, theatrical shows, puppet shows, water sports, fishing competitions are all part of the weekend entertainment.

Odense International Film Festival, Denmark

The Odense International Film Festival, is an international short film festival that offers a wide variety of films. It runs from 29th August to 4th September. It celebrates the work of indie film makers while allowing them to meet the viewers. It is also a competition with three categories and is an Oscar qualifying film festival. The films are free but you should reserve tickets in advance to guarantee a seat.
