The Chocolate Hills of Bohol, Philippines
If you are planning a trip to the Philippines, head for the island of Bohol to see the famous Chocolate Hills. Around 1260 weird conical mounds take up an area of 50 square kilometres, rising to heights of up to 50 metres. Geologists claim that these unusual peaks were formed through a combination of water erosion and the movement of tectonic plates, but the mythology behind this area is much more romantic. Apparently a giant, upon hearing of the death of his love, wept huge teardrops that then fell and turned into the Chocolate Hills. Whatever their origin, today they are one of the most unique sights on the planet. Visit during the dry season as the grass turns chocolate brown, to see why they have earned their iconic name.
Plain of Jars, Laos
For the budding archaeologists among you, taking a tour around the Plain of Jars in the Xiangkhouang Province, Laos is an unmissable treat. Thousands of huge stone jars dating from around 500 BC to 200 AD lie scattered across the landscape in clusters, with many standing up to three metres high. Tread the marked paths with a tour guide to hear all the theories and legends surrounding these giant vessels, and look out for the single painted jar to be found in Site 1. Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland
Taking a trip to Northern Ireland would not be complete without visiting the Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim. This volcanic rock formation on the northeast coast is formed from 38,000 basalt columns, all of them a pristine hexagonal shape that seriously hints at some kind of divine or alien design. As legend has it, two giants, one Irish and one Scottish, challenged each other to a fight, and the Irish giant built the causeway to try and reach across the sea.
