The Chocolate Hills of Bohol, Philippines
If you are planning a trip to the Philippines, head for the island of Bohol to see the famous Chocolate Hills. Around 1260 weird conical mounds take up an area of 50 square kilometres, rising to heights of up to 50 metres. Geologists claim that these unusual peaks were formed through a combination of water erosion and the movement of tectonic plates, but the mythology behind this area is much more romantic. Apparently a giant, upon hearing of the death of his love, wept huge teardrops that then fell and turned into the Chocolate Hills. Whatever their origin, today they are one of the most unique sights on the planet. Visit during the dry season as the grass turns chocolate brown, to see why they have earned their iconic name.
Plain of Jars, Laos
For the budding archaeologists among you, taking a tour around the Plain of Jars in the Xiangkhouang Province, Laos is an unmissable treat. Thousands of huge stone jars dating from around 500 BC to 200 AD lie scattered across the landscape in clusters, with many standing up to three metres high. Tread the marked paths with a tour guide to hear all the theories and legends surrounding these giant vessels, and look out for the single painted jar to be found in Site 1. Whether you love a good unsolved mystery, or you enjoy roaming the countryside whilst learning a little about ancient history, then add this site to your list of weird and whacky places to visit.
Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland
Taking a trip to Northern Ireland would not be complete without visiting the Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim. This volcanic rock formation on the northeast coast is formed from 38,000 basalt columns, all of them a pristine hexagonal shape that seriously hints at some kind of divine or alien design. As legend has it, two giants, one Irish and one Scottish, challenged each other to a fight, and the Irish giant built the causeway to try and reach across the sea. Thankfully, you can now book both flights and accommodation in Northern Ireland with ebookers – if only the giants had known! But then again, without their hard work, we would not have this wonderful, must-see World Heritage Site on our doorstep.
The Nazca Lines, Peru
Next up, our search for the most weird and wonderful destinations in the world takes us to South America, and the Nazca Lines found in the Nazca Desert in Southern Peru. It is believed that these giant drawings, carved into the red surface of the dry pebble landscape, were created between 200 BC and 600 AD for religious purposes. By either standing on one of the nearby foothills or taking an aerial tour over the region, you can spot the stunning images of birds, monkeys, orcas, flowers and trees. There are hundreds of illustrations to be seen in this dry, arid place. Make sure you add this destination to your Peru trip for a once in a lifetime experience.
Cat Island, Japan
For all those cat-lovers taking a trip to Japan, the island of Tashirojima is an ideal destination to come face-to-face with hundreds of feline friends. Nicknamed Cat Island for its huge population of stray cats, the 100 villagers are heavily outnumbered by their furry companions. Cats of all colours, shapes and sizes lounge around the houses and the harbour of this small community, maintained by the belief that in feeding these animals, good fortune and luck will be brought to you. You can easily book everything you need for your holiday to Japan through ebookers, and once there, simply hop on an hour-long ferry from nearby Ishinomaki to reach the shores of this pet paradise.
