Medieval yet modern, sitting regally on the banks of the Danube, Bratislava is a beautiful city full of delightful contrasts. With plentiful affordable flights to Bratislava Airport from the UK, it’s never been easier to whisk your way to Slovakia’s capital and cultural centre. Here, you’ll encounter the charm of the intimate inner city, where labyrinthine streets are packed with cafés, restaurants and bars. Dominating the skyline from its hilltop is Bratislava Castle, neighboured by a scattering of equally impressive historic churches. Trips outside the city centre are just as remarkable – tour the vineyards and villages of the city’s outskirts, with numerous trails through lush forest and easily accessible mountain hikes.
Cheap tickets to Bratislava are easy to come by all year round, with mid-summer and December seeing slight price hikes and January the cheapest month. A summer visit is a rewarding experience, not only for enjoying the plentiful parks and vineyards, but for alfresco dining on the old town’s streets. The range of offerings at Bratislava Zoo increases significantly in summer too. December visitors are in for a treat with a unique Christmas Market experience on the main square. After a day of skiing in the nearby mountains, you couldn’t ask for a more festive evening. Sample the local mulled wine and other delicacies as the Old Town Hall provides an elegant backdrop.
Ryanair dominates the skies over Slovakia and the low-cost carrier offer ample cheap flights to Bratislava from the UK. They offer over a dozen flights a week from London Stansted alone, and you’ll also find direct connections from Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Direct flights to Bratislava take between two and two-and-a-half hours and connecting flights serve residents of other UK cities, such as Glasgow and Belfast.
Slovakia’s main flight hub, Bratislava sits five miles east of the city centre. Public buses are the cheapest way to zip into the city, costing only €1, but be aware that you’ll have to buy your ticket in advance from the machines in the arrivals hall. The number 61 goes to the city’s main railway station, but you can transfer at Trnavské mýto intersection and take a tram to the city centre. Taxis are easy to get and cost less than €30 for the 20-minute drive.
This old city is centred around the unmissable Bratislava Castle, peering from its hilltop perch over the glistening Danube. Make sure you also check out its neighbour, the beautiful 13th-century St. Martin’s Cathedral – Slovakia’s largest church, where Hungarian kings were crowned in bygone days. Bratislava is home to the Slovak National Museum and the world-famous Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, who perform in the refined Reduta building. When you’ve finished exploring the expansive Hviezdoslav square, seek out the city’s many unique vantage points: the SNP Bridge’s “UFO” observation deck and the hilltop Slavín monument offer wonderful views across the city’s orange rooftops.
