Long queue at steps onto plane. Very short time to advise boarding gate.
I appreciated the punctuality of the flights, and the helpful email messages from EasyJet.
More and more UK visitors are among the 30 million tourists who flock to Florence each year. Fabled art, history and architecture set in Tuscan sandstone and sunshine make the city a dream for culture lovers. There are regular flights to Florence from Glasgow to London, and many places in between. The spellbinding Italian city has a plethora of cultural riches crammed into the world’s most prestigious galleries, such as the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti.
Florence enjoys a warm southern European climate, with hot, sultry summer evenings, but the Tuscan capital is far enough north to get pretty chilly come winter. This means it’s more expensive to get to the city from May to August, and late autumn to spring are when you’re most likely to find cheap tickets to Florence. While you’re guaranteed better weather during the summer months, the humidity and crowds of high season mean it’ll be much less sticky if you visit in May, June or September. And don’t forget much of Italy closes down for summer holidays in August so getting around might take a little longer than usual.
The best place in the UK to find direct flights to Florence is from London. British Airways provides regular connections to Florence’s airport, Peretola, from London Gatwick, with the journey lasting around 2 hours in total. Another popular entry point for Florentine adventures is the neighbouring city of Pisa. It’s just over an hour by car or bus to Florence and you can even take in the Leaning Tower before you go. Ryanair offers flights to Pisa from Liverpool and Stansted year round, making it a more viable cheaper option for your visit to the Cradle of the Renaissance.
Once you've stepped off your flight to Florence into Florence Airport, the easiest way to get to the jaw-dropping sights that await in the city centre is to hop in a taxi. There’s a set fare of €20, and if that sounds a little steep, then you can jump aboard one of the shuttle buses that ferry passengers between the airport and the central railway station of Santa Maria Novella (SNM). The buses run every 30 minutes and will set you back around €10 for a return ticket. If you fly into Pisa, your best option is to take one of the direct buses run by Terravision from the airport to SNM. Watch the countryside fly by on the 70-minute journey as butterflies flutter in your belly in anticipation of the Florentine visions that await you.
Since the medieval heyday of Florence’s Medici family, visitors to the city have gazed in wonder at the architecture and art of its Renaissance masters. A simple stroll through the city’s streets provides almost as many spine-tingling moments as actually being inside the many ornate basilicas and museums. The magical Ponte Vecchio and the humongous dome of the city’s cathedral are just some of the wow-inducing treasures waiting to be discovered.
