Jeddah’s rich heritage, fascinating culture, laid-back charm and mouthwatering cuisine more than justify its romantic nickname of ‘bride of the Red Sea’. It’s been at the epicentre of international trade and commerce for centuries and is still one of the busiest ports in the Middle East. Visitors come to enjoy the architectural treasures of its old city, the natural wonders of its coral reefs, its sun-drenched beaches, iconic landmarks and delicious seafood. And with direct flights to Jeddah from the UK clocking in at around 6 hours, you’ll soon be disembarking at King Abdulaziz International Airport ready to fall under its spell.
Demand is at its highest during the Hajj pilgrimage season around October and the Jeddah Summer Festival, a major cultural event in the Saudi Arabian calendar running through July and August, so if you’re after cheap flights to Jeddah it’s a good idea to give these months a miss. Winters are mild on the Red Sea coast, so January and February are ideal for sightseeing without the peak season crowds. If you’re after a beach break, early May and late September can throw up some surprising last-minute bargains if you’re prepared to shop around.
British Airways and Saudi Arabian Airlines both fly direct to Jeddah from London Heathrow, and Saudi also has direct departures from Manchester. Widen your options with a one-stop itinerary such as Turkish Airlines from Gatwick via Istanbul, AtlasGlobal from London Stansted via Istanbul, or EgyptAir from Heathrow via Cairo. Turkish Airlines also offers a route from Edinburgh or Birmingham with a stop-over in Istanbul, while Air France departs from the same airports via Paris.
King Abdulaziz International Airport is around 12 miles north of Jeddah. As one of the busiest airports in Saudi Arabia, it’s designed to handle large numbers of visitors, especially during the Hajj, when it opens a dedicated terminal. The easiest way to reach your city centre destination is by taxi, but it’s wise to agree on a price before you set out. Many of the resort hotels offer private shuttles for guests, so check before you travel to see if this service is included in your package.
From the moment you set eyes on King Fahd’s Fountain, you’ll be transfixed by the beauty of Jeddah. This graceful water jet is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, reaching a height of over 985 feet. The traditional buildings carefully preserved in the Al-Balad quarter have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status, while the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography houses a revealing collection of antiquities in a former royal palace. Step back in time at the atmospheric Al Alawi souq, where spice merchants and garment traders have been haggling over their wares for centuries, and be sure to sample the local speciality kabsa – a lip-smacking dish of rice, meat and vegetables.
