Airports in Russia

Russia has a large airport network, although most international travellers will fly into either Moscow or Saint Petersburg. Moscow's main airport for visitors is Sheremetyevo International, which is located 29km north-west of the city centre, connected by the M10 motorway. For anyone travelling to Saint Petersburg, you will arrive at Pulkovo International Airport, which is 17km south of the city centre. It receives international and domestic flights so connecting flights to and from Saint Petersburg are an option during your stay in Russia.

Transportation from the Airports

For visitors flying into Moscow, the easiest way to get to the city centre is by the airport train link or a combination of train and metro. The train stops outside Terminal F, with shuttle buses running from here to Terminals B and C, and the train takes you directly into Moscow's Savelovsky or Belorussky stations in approximately 35 minutes. Tickets cost 320 roubles. Taxis from the airport tend to be expensive, so taking the train is generally the cheaper option. From Saint Petersburg, bus lines 13 and 39 run from the airport to the city centre, and cost 23 roubles. The journey time is 30-35 minutes for the 39 route from Terminal 1, and 20-25 minutes for the 13 route from Terminal 2. Taxis can be booked from the airport with a price given by the driver, and car hire is available. Travelling time by car from the airport to Saint Petersburg centre is approximately 35 minutes.

Weather in Russia

The sheer size of Russia means that the weather varies according to where you stay. Moscow and Saint Petersburg are in south-western Russia, so have more temperate climates than you might expect. The warmest months are July and August, and these are generally the most popular months for tourists to come to Russia, as temperatures can reach 30˚C at this time of year. Be warned that the summer can also be quite wet, so before taking off on your flight to Russia, don't forget to pack your waterproof clothing as well as your sunscreen. The winter, although cold, is a beautiful time to visit Russia as it glitters under the snow. The best time for a winter holiday is November and February when the snow has fallen and winter has settled in.

Highlights of Russia

Russia is a fascinating country full of wonder and charm. Moscow is home to stunning art galleries and museums, and the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre, and in Saint Petersburg, you will find yourself staying in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which includes the city's historic centre and much more besides. Another attraction here is the world-famous Mariinsky Theatre, where you can experience a Russian opera or ballet in its traditional setting. For something that little bit different, you might like to travel a bit further north and experience the Arctic side of Russia.
