Lovely hotel, but high up

We spent 4 nights at the Monte Carlo Hotel (Late February) and we did enjoy our stay. The rooms are comfortable and clean and the bathroom was modern and also well maintained. The views from the front of the hotel are stunning you look out over Funchal and the sea. The hotel's high prominent position offers you a great panorama. Of course, such a view comes at a price at that is the hill it is situated on. It is quite a climb up the narrow streets from the waterfront to the hotel, so I would only recommend this hotel to people who are fit enough for the walk or can get a taxi back up the hill. There is no wi-fi in the rooms, only in the bar area and on the hotel veranda. Our room was directly above the bar, but it was not in range. We found the range of food quite limited. Breakfast is mainly continental with cheese, ham and salad etc. and fruit. There is yoghurt and cereals also available, but the only hot food at breakfast was either scrambled eggs or hard-boiled eggs neither of which was actually ever hot (unless you have breakfast early). We did not have an evening meal at the hotel because, again, the menu was too limited and only served 3 nights a week (This may be because it was only the end of February and not full season.) I am not vegetarian, but there did not appear to be a vegetarian option, only meat or fish. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. All-in-all, we had a lovely stay at the Monte Carlo. Staying here was a lovely experience. I would recommend it to others if you are able to cope with the hill climb to get home in the evening.

Room with a view

Old building high above town with great view from front room (extra charge) & lower public terrace. But a hard walk up from town after levada walking or after an evening meal. The one evening meal taken in hotel was almost inedible, tho staff were charming. One evening we bought picnic food on the way up & ate in room. Strongly recommend Restaurante dos Combatentes in town straight down from hotel. Monte Carlo has a touch of Fawlty Towers, with the patron hanging around much of the time (no speak English). Beds would make good ironing boards but room & bathroom kept neat & clean. Shower room very good. Price good, but I would recommend this hotel to understanding friends - with caveats / warnings

Full of character, central location

Old style and rather quaint 3 star hotel, an imposing period building that would suit those looking for something apart from the mainstream and the bland hotel zone of Funchal. Central location with superb terrace and views. Friendly staff, kind and happy to help. Walking distance of restaurants and attractions if you can manage hills, little parking at hotel, not on the airport bus route.

Rakennus oli upea, ei mikään moderni tylsä hotelli. Historiallinen paikka, aivan ihana! Sijainti hyvä, ei keskellä hotellialuetta vaan pienien sokkelokatujen keskellä.

Hotelli parhailla maisemilla.

Pros: Maisema, sijainti, rakennuksen historia, henkilökunta.
Cons: Liikenneolosuhteet hiukan vaativat. Lähimmälle linja-autopysäkille matkaa jonkin verran.
Location: Hotelli sijaitsee keskustan yhteydessä mäen rinteessä. Lähistöllä lukuisia museioita sekä nähtävyyksiä. Itse hotellikin on hieno nähtävyys.
Vietimme ikimuistoisen 30 vuotishäämatkan Monte Carlossa. Hotelli on ainutlaatuinen kohde. Alkuperäistä ilmapiiriä on vaalittu hienosti; tuntui kuin olisi viettänyt lomaa elegantissa vanhassa englantilaisessa romaanissa. Joka hetki oli valmis näkemään Hercules Poirotin astelevan aulassa vastaan tyytyväisenä viiksiään sivellen. Henkilökunta oli ystävällistä ja sopivan seurallista. Saimme nauttia rauhasta ja upeasta maisemasta Funchalin keskustaan ja merelle. Kuntoilut tulivat luonnostaan kävelyretkillä. Muutamia varauksia teimme hotellin avustuksella. Siivous toimi erittäin hyvin. Varustelutaso on hiukan parempi kuin kolmen tähden hotellilta odottaa. Kaikkea ei kylläkään voi odottaa saavansa näin hyvään hintaan. Aamupala esimerkiksi on hiukan vaatimaton. Wifin toiminta-alue melko suppea; lähinnä aula ja ravintola. Omassa huoneessamme tosin yleensä toimi. Suosittelemme siis lämpimästi hotellia. Heikkojalkaisten on tosin syytä varautua kulkemaan taksilla melko paljon.

hyväkuntoisille

Hotelli sijaitsee jyrkän mäen päällä, joten hotelliin kävellessä tuli hengästyminen ja hiki. Hotellin etuterassilta oli loistava näköala kaupungiin, merelle ja vuorille. Etuterassi oli viihtyisä ja rauhallinen. Siinä oli mukava nauttia aamupalaa, istuskella ja katsella ympärilleen. Wifi ei toiminut kuin ensimmäisenä päivänä, mutta emme kysyneet syytä toimimattomuuteen. Huone oli viihtyisä, öisin viileähkö. Sängyn patja oli kova. Lisähuopia ja tyynyjä oli saatavissa. WC ja kylpyhuoneessa ei ollut lattiakaivoa joten lattia pysyi märkänä. Lämmintä vettä tuli riittävästi. Huoneesta oli loistava näköala merelle, kaupunkiin ja kukkulalle.
