What’s the best time of year to book cheap flights to Oslo?

Unusually for a European capital, December often throws up the best bargains on cheap tickets to Oslo. This is good news for winter sports fans, as this is when the city begins to gear up for the ski season. November is a quiet month when accommodation prices tend to be more affordable. Oslo’s famous jazz and chamber music festivals, both held annually in August, and the Norwegian Wood rock festival in June bring internationally renowned artists and their fans to the city, so demand for flights during these months can push up the prices.

How do I get from Oslo Airport to the city centre?

Oslo’s main international airport, Gardermoen, is almost 30 miles from the city centre, so leave time for the journey when making your travel plans. Luckily, there’s an extensive public transport network at your fingertips. The easiest transfer is the Flytoget Airport Express train, which runs from directly underneath the terminal to Oslo Central Station in under 25 minutes. There’s also an express coach service into the city centre, while local buses make more frequent stops. For door-to-door speed and convenience, pick up a cab from the rank outside the terminal.

Favourite haunts of Munch and Ibsen

Get a different view of the city from the top of the Holmenkollen Ski Jump, home of the prestigious annual ski festival. Wander round the Damstredet district to see charming wooden homes dating from the 18th century and visit Ibsen’s grave in Var Frelsers cemetery, then share an aquavit with the ghost of Norway’s famous playwright at his favourite table in the Grand Café on Karl Johans gate.
