Set in a majestic fjord and surrounded by dense forest, Oslo is Norway’s capital and home to its biggest transport hub, Oslo Airport. Flying from London to Oslo takes you into the heart of mystical Scandinavia, where you’ll find a modern metropolis on the edge of Oslofjord surrounded by spellbinding natural beauty. When you’re not hopping between the fjord’s many islands, venture out to Oslo’s wooded hills for scenery that’ll take your breath away. Back on the city streets, there’s no time to get bored – besides having a pulsing nightlife, Oslo is Norway’s cultural hub and is packed with fantastic museums, theatres and galleries.
As you’d expect from a winter wonderland, Oslo is busiest in December, when visitors flock to the Christmas markets and airline prices soar. The good news is that great-value deals are available in November and January, so you can avoid the larger crowds while enjoying the same terrific opportunities for cross-country skiing, sledding and wandering through the city’s snow-covered streets. August is also a popular month for holidaymakers, who come to take advantage of Oslo’s natural beauty and many music festivals before summer ends. The rest of the warmer season is a great time to book London-Oslo flights, as you’ll have the chance to hike, bike and swim.
London to Oslo is a well-travelled route, so you’ll have no trouble finding regular deals, with direct flights on offer from all three main airports of Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. Most international flights arrive into the city’s main Oslo Airport in Gardermoen – take your pick from choices such as Ryanair from Stansted, Norwegian Air from Gatwick, or Air Baltic or Scandinavian Airlines from Heathrow. The Norwegian capital is also closer than you may think, with a flight time of just two hours.
Oslo Airport is 30 miles northeast of the city and the quickest way to travel to the centre is on the high-speed Flytoget Airport Express Train, which departs every 10-20 minutes and costs about NOK 200, with a journey time of about 20 minutes. Other options are available that are lighter on your purse – the NSB train leaves every half-hour and takes just 25 minutes for half the price, while buses are available too. If you want the convenience of a taxi, make sure to order from the taxi information desk at arrivals to benefit from fixed rates. Be aware that taxis to Oslo can cost more than NOK 700.
The serene and laid-back Oslo is the perfect place to take refuge from the winter blues or relax on a summer city break. When you’re not embracing the wonders of the city’s culture in the Royal Palace or Opera House, scour the outlying forests for moose, get your skis on and head out on a cross-country ski trail, or take a dip in the fjord’s shimmering waters.
