This is a beautiful property built in 1912 when Manila must have been very different. The rooms are spacious and the lobby is a sight for sore eyes. Usually there is an orchestra, or at least a pianist. However, in some respects the hotel does not live up to its five star rating. Our 4th floor room had several electric sockets that did not work, making charging our devices awkward and air conditioning that was either set at 22 C (too cold for me) or off. The room also smelled bad, with a faint hint (to me at least) of tobacco smoke. The furnishings looked rather worn and perhaps a little dirty. After complaining, we were given a 13th floor room, which was fresher and cleaner, and had a slightly better view (Manila docks and bay) which was very similar, even to the point of having several sets of sockets that didn't work. The air conditioning appeared to be stuck at 24 C, but the temperature was the same, and didn't change even if I turned it off. (I have a thermometer on my watch, and that says 22C.) A difference was that the mirror lights in the bathroom didn't turn off, due to a broken switch. The breakfast is a marvellous spread, except for the coffee and fruit: can you believe that at least half of it was canned and the rest wasn't top quality. The selection was very limited - in a country with a million different types. Lobby service was slow. Fries were cold twice, for example. An order of a strong pot of tea produced a large pot with a single tea bag!

Accomodation was really okay, but the restaurant gets below zero points. The table was not clean, waitres were ständig around near cashier and did not realize new guests. After about one hour we got finally something on the table. Starter came after main dish. Surrounding tables were not emptied, when guests left.
