When you're comparing flights from London to Naples, one thing looms larger than Mount Vesuvius – price. Of course, there's the little matter of a bright, Mediterranean city buzzing with Italian sass. And a few archaeological treasures so good they could be film sets. Or places where the earth moves and bubbles like steaming porridge. But first and foremost, you want cheap airfares. And we can show you how to get them.
The first thing is to think about what day you want to fly out to Italy's third-biggest city. Travel between Monday and Friday and you'll save significantly on your London to Naples airfare. If you're happy to land at night, even better – evenings are 10% cheaper than any other time of day. And, of course, the seasons play their part. From September onwards, prices for Naples head south fast, with the best deals in early October or late January. To guarantee the best weather, though, it’s September when Naples is at its best.
Luton, Stansted and Gatwick are all quite close for prices, but Luton seems to edge it for the cheapest tickets most of the time. Getting to Luton from central London isn't hard, either, especially by train. Services depart through the day from St Pancras and go direct to Luton Airport Parkway. They run several times an hour and you’ll be there in 25-40 minutes. Allow an extra 10 minutes for the airport shuttle bus. You can also use cheap coach services to get directly to the airport from London Victoria Bus Station.
If you want to fly for less on your London Naples flights, easyJet is the way to go. This low-cost carrier flies to Naples International Airport (NAP) from Luton, Stansted and Gatwick, so you're spoilt for choice. Alitalia from Heathrow and British Airways from Gatwick are good options for a touch more class. Flights take 2 and a half to 3 hours to jet the 1,000 miles from London airports to this southern Italian gem.
Naples International Airport is only a few miles north of the city centre. You almost could walk it, if you were travelling light. Most choose to take the Alibus, which costs €3 for a single. This takes you directly to the two central stops at Stazione Centrale (main railway station) and Piazza Municipio (close to the ferry). From either stop it's usually a short taxi ride to hotels in central Naples. Or you could cut out the middle man, and catch an official taxi from the airport.
When you're in Naples, you’re sure to want get out and about. Nearby Vesuvius, Pompeii and Campo Flegrei are all attractions that blaze on the horizon. But you need to pay your dues to Naples too. There are architectural delights like the Duomo to gorge on. And food that is treated like a religion here. So, feast on Neapolitan delights like parmigiana di melanzane, or discover Naples’ gift to the world: the margherita pizza. Then walk it all off with a stroll along the sea-lapped waterfront of the Lungomare, as the Neapolitan sky is illuminated by the stars.
