There aren’t many cities in the world that can rival Rome for awe-inspiring history and cultural wonders, but just down the Amalfi Coast, Italy’s ancient southern capital certainly gives it a run for its money. Naples dates back to the 6th century BC and the city’s many exquisitely preserved ruins offer a spine-tingling glimpse into antiquity. With famously yummy cuisine and plenty of Mediterranean sunshine, Naples is a perfect destination for any and all holidaymakers. And with daily flights to Naples from cities across the UK, your Italian getaway is just a mouse click away.
Naples basks in the famous Mediterranean climate, with sizzling sunshine in the hazy summer months and pleasantly warm weather throughout spring and autumn. October to December is the best time to book your Neapolitan adventure, with plentiful cheap flights to Naples from multiple UK airports. The peak Italian holiday month of August can be swelteringly humid with many of the city’s businesses shutting up shop and making for the jam-packed beaches along the coast. However if you can bear the heat, this can be the best time to avoid crowds of tourists among the city’s historic streets and alleyways.
The south of Italy is an increasingly popular holiday destination and sun seekers and culture vultures from across the length and breadth of the UK are flying into Naples throughout the year. Most of London’s major airports have connections to Italy’s southern capital, with British Airways providing a direct service from Gatwick. Meridiana fly is a less well-known – but lower cost – airline offering cheap tickets to Naples from London Gatwick. The orange-tipped planes of budget carrier EasyJet also fly from Liverpool and Edinburgh to the Bay of Napoli during the summer and autumn months.
Your flight to Naples will bring you to the city’s only international airport. Located in the Capodichino district, southern Italy’s busiest airport is just a few miles north-east of the city’s UNESCO-listed old town. While there are no train lines linking the air transport hub with the city centre, the tangenziale bypass road connects the airport with most parts of the city by car or taxi in under 30 minutes. There are also plenty of regular buses that will zip you straight to the heart of Naples. The municipal 3S line and Alibus services will get you to the city’s central train station and port for around €5. There’s a fixed charge of about €25 for taxis to and from the airport.
With a history stretching back a mind-boggling 3,000 years, Naples is a must-visit destination for any history buffs or ancient culture enthusiasts. Possibly the most famous, and vivid, relic of antiquity is just a few miles outside the city at Pompeii. Join the crowds of tourists in touring the eerie streetscapes of this ancient town that were perfectly preserved when nearby volcano Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.

Naples has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers in the mid-90s. This coincides with peak travel season, from May to September. Naples is already the most densely populated city in Europe, so its version of crowded trumps even the most visited continental cities. August is a particularly rough time to visit; pretty much the entire country is on holiday, so many restaurants and hotels are either closed or filled with Italian tourists, who flock to the coasts. The tourist season also brings higher hotel and restaurant prices—both of which fill a lot further in advance.
You can also expect to see high costs around Easter, when Naples hosts a huge parade, and Christmas, when hundreds of nativity scenes are on display. During New Year’s, tourists arrive to enjoy one of Italy’s grandest fireworks displays.
You’ll find better deals and fewer crowds during the shoulder seasons, specifically from September through November and in the early spring. Naples has a rainy stretch from December to March, but for the rest of the year, the weather is pretty ideal. Other than during the summer, temperatures average in the 50s, and breezes off of the Bay of Naples keep the air fresh—even in southern Italy’s biggest city.
