Fun and architecture aren't words that normally mingle. But they do in Barcelona. This is the city where Gaudí splashed his wild Gothic fantasias, after all. Catalonia's capital has design chic stamped into its very bones. As you come in to land at Barcelona Airport you might just spot Gaudí at his most extravagant in the spires of La Sagrada Familia. And all sorts of thrills can be yours in colourful Barcelona. Shopping adventures call out in Las Ramblas, while taste buds are tingled in tapas bars and restaurants from Barceloneta to La Ribera.
Barcelona is at its balmiest when spring melts into summer, and at its craziest in August's peak. Autumn starts out mellow and ends with a splash, when the rains come to town. But even in winter Catalonia's central city has its warm glows. One thing you can't escape is the crowds. The city is quietest either side of those long summer months. It's not easy to find a bargain period in air fares when you book flights to Barcelona. But you can save a few pounds by booking a couple of months before you fly out.
There's no doubt that Barcelona is popular. And popular means a bounty of budget airlines waiting to whisk you to El Prat Airport. Gatwick is the UK's hub, with Norwegian Air and Vueling flying from here to the Catalonian capital. EasyJet also fly from Gatwick, as well as from Southend and Luton, while Ryanair hops over from Stansted. Expect to be stepping onto the warmed tarmac at Barcelona Airport just a couple of hours after leaving London's airports.
El Prat is a few miles south-west of the city, just out of sight of Barcelona's wonders. So it's a cinch to reach the city from here. The Aerobús has convenience written all over it. You can catch this shuttle bus up to ten times an hour. It takes a bit more than half an hour and costs only €10 for a return. Even cheaper is Bus 46, which costs just €2 one-way. The RENFE R2 Nord train can reach Sants in less than 20 minutes. Or if you want it simple, a taxi will zip you into the heart of Barcelona for as little as €30.

This is a city designed with a flair and vision to knock your socks off. La Sagrada Familia has the biggest wow factor. It's not yet finished, but Gaudí's triumph still has jaws dropping and spines tingling. Then there's the sheer glee of Park Güell, the laid-back loveliness of Eixample, or the dark meanderings of the Barri Gotic. But there's more to Barcelona than a theme park of architectural goodies. La Boqueria market sings with colour, smells and sticky-fingered feasts. A cable car to Sants Montjuic will put you on top of the world. And Barceloneta's beaches call for lazy days of sunning, and cool nights dining.

Blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate, Barcelona is ripe any time of year. The Barcelona “brand” holds such a high tourist ranking that the city gets a steady stream of visitors year-round. The optimal times to visit are spring (May and June) and fall (September and October), with clear, sunny days and breezy afternoons that are perfect for strolling or biking around the city.
Summers are long, hot, and humid, but the sea offers the option for a quick reprieve. This period also happens to be the peak of the tourist season, when you’ll encounter the longest lines and biggest crowds. In August, however, locals typically leave the city and many restaurants and shops shut down, to the detriment of local flavor.
Winters are rainy and crisp, but the tourist crowds thin and hotel rates drop.
