If you’re looking for a fantastic city break, make sure to consider an Amsterdam to London break, as the UK’s capital has something to suit all tastes. It swirls with the magic of a city that's known a millennium of kings and queens. It fizzes with the wealth and energy of a global centre finance. It charms with a hodgepodge jumble of grandiose palaces, quirky skyscrapers and striking monuments. And it surprises with an exciting babble of diverse communities.
The cost of Amsterdam to London flights peak during the summer and at Christmas time, but the quieter months of mid-March, October and November offer some really cheap deals. The cheapest day of the week to fly to London is Tuesday, in the afternoon. There are sometimes dips in prices 6-7 weeks before departure, so keep an eye out for those occasional bargains. The most popular time to come is in early spring, when the sun is smiling and the beautiful parks are brimming with a myriad of colours.
Schiphol Airport (AMS) is 9 miles southwest of Amsterdam city centre. Getting to the airport is really easy from the city centre on the NS Dutch Railways, in particular as it takes just 20-25 minutes. Schiphol only has one gigantic terminal, split over three levels, and the local train stops directly below. Departures to London are on the second level.
It takes just under an hour for Amsterdam London flights to cover the 200 miles to the UK capital from Amsterdam. But remember that Amsterdam is one hour ahead of London, so you’ll gain an extra hour. Aegean Airlines and Air Lingus are fantastic carriers if you want to travel in style. Alternatively, you can fly for less with budget airlines, Flybe, easyJet and Vueling.
Amsterdam to London flights are cheapest when you fly into London Southend Airport (SEN). It's a small airport with just one terminal, and is located some 40 miles from Central London. The train station is perfect for city centre connections and takes about 50 minutes. Expect to pay approximately GBP 15 for the train. The Coachline X30 service into London operates from a bus stop just opposite the terminal, close to the taxi rank.
There's so much to see, do and enjoy here, but where should you start? Head first to Trafalgar Square and stand beneath Nelson's Column; you'll find all the roads lead out to glittering London attractions from here. Then you should head east, across the Thames, for the cultural highs of the Southbank Centre, Royal National Theatre and Royal Festival Hall. If you head west, you’ll be in the regal part of town, with the Mall and Buckingham Palace taking pride of place. The road south brings you to the heart of the country's political power, the Palaces of Westminster (Houses of Parliament), from where Big Ben booms merrily across the city. Alternatively, if you head north, you’ll find the glitz and glamour of London's West End. London really does have something for everyone.
