Gran Canaria is very well served with conference centres, making the most of the Canary Islands' reputation for warm dry weather all year round. One of the newest and best is the Canary Islands Convention Centre just outside the island's capital and not too far from many of Gran Canaria's hotels. The conference centre has a view of the Atlantic, the beach and the city.
Gran Canaria has a massive selection of restaurants and cuisines, with steakhouses, Italian and South American to the fore. If you fancy pushing the boat out a little, and trying local produce, try the Restaurante Casa de Galicia for seafood or, for something different, the El apartamento on Avenida Mesa y Lopez. Many Gran Canaria hotels offer meals in their own restaurants.
Las Arenas, the main shopping centre in Gran Canaria, has all the main high street brands and is located close to the Convention Centre. Just outside the city, a new designer outlet complex, Las Terrazas, offers important discounts on brands like Calvin Klein and Levi's.
The Dunes at Maspalomas are a spectacular natural site but also a naturist area. Exploring the interior of the island on a jeep safari is fun and you might even see some snow on the mountains even if it there is bright sunshine in Gran Canaria.
With its mountains, sea and beaches, Gran Canaria provides tourists the opportunity to indulge into a multitude of land and water sports. Scuba diving is great fun in such a clear sea, and if you are new to the sport, you can find a local instructor. If water sports are not your passion, the rugged interior of the island is almost purpose-built for long hikes, mountain biking or rock-climbing.
