Flights to Sydney in a nutshell

Australia is a mecca for UK travellers, from honeymooners to backpacking gap-year students, and the magical capital of New South Wales is usually the first port of call. Sydney is the largest and most diverse city in Australia, and it’s also one of the most beautiful. Flights to Sydney touch down just south of the city centre in the suburb of Mascot. Make sure to catch a glimpse of the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge as you swoosh by – an awe-inspiring view, no matter how many times you’ve seen it.

When’s the best time to book your flight to Sydney?

Sydney’s spellbinding combination of natural and manmade attractions make for a thrilling visit any time of the year – for eager first-timers and veteran travellers alike. The city’s humid subtropical climate means temperatures can soar above a sizzling 40°C during the summer months of December to February. However, it’s usually in or around a comfortable 30 degrees, and Sydneysiders waste no time in hitting the many beaches that dot the harbour as soon as the temperature rises. The milder spring months of September to November are the best if you are looking for cheap flights to Sydney. Lifeguards patrol the beaches from October onwards and even though it’s not officially summer, you’ll definitely need to bring your sun cream!

Where can I get return flights to Sydney from?

The only UK hub for air travel to Australia is London Heathrow airport. A huge range of airlines offer flights from England’s capital to Sydney, including British Airways, Quantas, Etihad, Emirates and Thai Airways. Given the distance, you won’t find especially cheap tickets to Sydney from London, but carriers such as Turkish Airlines and Malaysia Airlines can offer relatively low-cost rates if you book well enough in advance. It’s a mammoth journey that usually takes at least 25-30 hours, and depending on your airline, your refuelling stop might be in such far-flung, exotic cities as Dubai, Singapore or Hong Kong.

Getting from Sydney Airport to the city

Sydney Airport, also known as Kingsford Smith Airport, is just 5 miles south of the soaring city centre skyscrapers. The airport has excellent transport connections waiting to whisk you into Sydney’s cosmopolitan core and beyond. The Airport Link train is the fastest way to hit central Sydney. It takes under 15 minutes to get you to Central Station and departs from both the international and domestic terminals every 10 minutes. Sydney Buses’ route 400 service will also get you from the airport to the city centre, while a taxi will cost you around AUD$50 dollars one way.

The soaring beauty of sparkling Sydney

As well as manmade wonders, the city has a wellspring of jaw-dropping natural attractions. Shake off the jetlag after your flight to Sydney with a stroll down Bondi Beach – a surfer’s paradise with a perfect rolling swell. The Royal National Park and Botanic Gardens showcase the country’s immense array of flora and fauna, and Sydney Harbour itself is a beautiful meandering waterway, perfect for a romantic ramble.
