The not so "Grand" Burstin needs cleaning and renovating. It's grubby on the outside and feels like a time warp to the 60s on the inside. There was a massive queue for check-in with two desks open (approximately a 45-minute queue at 10 pm). This hotel has over 500 rooms and only two very slow receptionists. We reluctantly queued for 15 minutes. However, due to no movement and gasping for fresh air due to the cigarette smoke and witnessing the foul-mouthed alcoholic fuelled behaviour around the main entrance and the sound of "The Macarena" from the party going on inside, we ultimately decided we'd sleep better in the car instead. They also don't respond to feedback or complaints. I'd advise you to stay well clear if you prefer not to listen to "The Macarena" from your bed, breathe in nicotine and stale beer and want to sleep in at least a little comfort. Even a hostel would provide a better night's sleep.

We stayed here before catching an early morning ferry from Dover. The lady on the front desk was helpful. We checked in, in the early hours of the morning and as we were only there for about 3 hours she gave us complimentary parking which is normally £5 per day. The very large hotel and rooms are dated but it done the job for us and considering it cost around £40 for 1 night we felt it done the job. If we were to need a hotel again before catching a ferry we would stay here just for a night sleeps but I wouldn’t pick this hotel for a few nights stay as I think there are better available for this price range. The underground car park was a bit of a mess, with rubbish on show and old appliances dumped there. It could be tidied up as that was one of our first impressions of the hotel.

This is one massive hotel and because of that there are always comings and goings and the foyer is constantly busy but once in your room which was clean all was peaceful. I got the overall impression that social services probably use this hotel a lot. We paid £42 for the night, had a nice warm nights comfortable peaceful sleep, didn't do breakfast been there before and it is manic, soooo many people but it's buffet, you can fill your boots if that's what you want. All in all you get what you pay for, been before and will go there again, I do like a bargain.

Linen was clean but bathrooms and general furniture needed updating. General condition of the whole hotel is run down, but they keep it as clean as they can. The pool is clean and has friendly staff. Drinks are an extortionate price - £12 for a pint and vodka and mixer. Breakfast is good, plenty of choice, hot and well cooked- avoid the pre made tea and coffee though and go for the machine or make your own. Perfect location, parking either in the hotel for £5 a day or over the road for £14 a day. Wish Britannia would update this hotel and show it a little care!
