We found the property Bear Hotel in very poor condition. This was emphasised in the room (25) we had. It was clear that only 'patching up' had taken place and then very poorly. Typical of this was the curtains that fell to bits when we tried to draw them. We did not make a complaint at the time as this was clearly the property that really does need massive capital investment. Green King should visit and see for itself.

Very central and close to Hayling island and Portsmouth. Our room was very outdated and noisy.

Picturesque exterior for an old coaching inn. Décor of interior also reasonable but we were on the third floor and many stairs and turns to get to the room. No lift. However some of the fittings needed some work - the hot tap in the bathroom and the fan were very noisy. One of the doors of the cupboard had come off the runner and the lining of the curtains were in tatters. Also, on the first day, the milk was 2 weeks past its sell-by date.

Out of the 2 days stayed - bath towels are not replaced . Heaters are switched off in the midnight and started again the early morning . No external heaters provided . The reception lady is terrible in answering . Not sure how they keep such people in reception . They are asking so many questions for each and every complain . Very painful

How does this place stay open? Havant a clue!

Pros: The eggs benedict on the breakfast menu is actually pretty good.
Cons: Literally everything could be improved.
Location: I walked down to the sea on the second night to a pub called "The Royal Oak". Don't eat there either! It has the same catering chain menu as The Bear.
I stayed here because I was working in the area. A vast building with a crumby extension tacked onto the period frontage, it gives a forbidding impression from the dark, cavernous restaurant area to the maze of musty carpeted corridors that led me (finally) to a room in the far corner of the building. Did I mention there are no lifts? Don't eat in the restaurant. The menu looks inviting but is clearly offered by a catering chain and everything seems to be taken straight out of the freezer and reheated. The staff are mostly very young, tatooed local lads who are actually very polite and helpful. I did have a run in with a particularly unhelpful recptionist. The decor is hilarious. Think fawlty towers 30 years on. I can't believe I paid over £100 a night for this. I really should have done my homework!
