2 Business trips

Pros: everything
Location: Only a few minutes walk from the last tram stop ( York Plc ) from the airport so perfect for commuting in and out, 10 mins uphill to Princes St etc.
As my title indicates the place was so good I stayed there 2 weeks in a row! To be honest price indicates where I stay and the rates they had on for a few weeks brought the calibre of rooms I normally don't get into budget window. I was spoilt on first 2 night trip as was upgraded from small to large double. The larger rooms it seems are across the road in a separate building accessed simply with a hotel card. The entrance hall and staircase gave a glimpse of what would expect in room as was bright, clean and nicely carpeted and decorated. The double room had a good quality carpet and large double bed with everything would expect, large flatscreen tv, small iron board and iron, tea & coffee BUT also a welcome hamper, filled up daily! The bathroom albeit cramped around the toilet if a large person was very modern and well fitted out with large rain shower and small head unit, temperature and pressure perfect. The 2nd stay was in a small double on the same side of street as the reception area and these were still perfect albeit not quite as good. The particular room I had was facing the street with an old non double glazed window which did give a chill feeling initially but with huge heavy quality curtains closed felt no draft at all. The floors were wooden flooring rather then carpet and smaller but really all the difference, as the new modern ensuite was identical to the larger rooms. All in all a perfect base only a few minutes walk from the last tram stop from airport.

Comfortable hotel close to Edinburgh city centre

Pros: The price was good for being close to the city centre.
Cons: I kept getting disconnected from the hotel's WiFi.
Location: The hotel is located off London Road, in a fairly quiet street. There's a large Vue cinema within a 5 minute walk and Calton Hill is close by.
The Cairn Hotel is located a 15 minute walk from Waverley railway station and Princes St. My single room was comfortable and well laid out.

Nice hotel close to the centre

Good hotel and close to the centre. Twin room in basement was a bit small, but it was fine for one nights stay. Generally ok, could have been a bit cleaner but all in all good

Ok for cheap and cheerful stay

Twin room adequate and clean. Very dated but close for all theatres would stay there again as not far from John Lewis under 5 min walk

Not as expected

Everything was very good but these two things: 1. There was something like a hole in the window, so it was pretty cold in the room, so that I had to turn the heating system, which was not enough and I managed somehow to full that hole with the curtain. 2. There was no toilet brush... nothing more to say, this is something essential if you want to keep your toilet clean. However I would recommend staying in this hotel, it is a nice place with minor mistakes, which can be easily fixed :)

Don't expect a good night's sleep

I only chose this hotel as I was looking something cheap in the city centre - and it was only cheap through a third party. I wouldn't pay full price for this hotel. Positives: Friendly night porter, can stay out as late as you want, comfortable matress, power shower. Staff leave you alone. Room is decent enough size. Negatives: Might as well not have curtains up as they let in so much light in the morning. A lot of noise in the morning from cleaners/people moving around. Very uncomfortable pillows. Bathroom is newly refurbished however stinks of mould after you use the shower. Carpet was filthy and ancient. Hotel does not have it's own restaurant, rather there is an Indian restaurant using the basement. Does not have a cocktail bar as advertised in reception. Walls are so thin that if your neighbour is watching TV you will be tortured.

noisy

great location, easy walking distance to princes street, castle and waverly station. unfortunately room was a bit shabby, stained carpet. and most of all the night time noise of traffic, barely slept. as no double glazing or secondary glazing. if had a room at back it may not be as bad. hotel was tired and dated, though was expecting more as had read reviews that was been refurbished i saw no evidence of this. being a single room it was small and had no bath just a shower. but room wasnt expensive so perhaps shouldnt expect more.

Good for the price

Great location about ten minutes walk from Edinburgh Waverley station. About 20 Minutes walk to the city centre. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room was small but that's what I expected for the money. A 2 night stay for 2 of us cost £110 so you can't ask for much! The room was reasonably clean although the carpet had seen better days and one on the chairs in our room had a burnt iron imprint on it...not sure how they managed that!! The shower was only a dribble but the water was hot (we were worried about this having read some of the reviews on here). We chose to not have breakfast at The Cairn as it was £10 per person.. so for two mornings it would have cost us £40... you can get much cheaper just down the road for a fiver. All in all a good budget hotel where the staff were very friendly.
